Species of Space (SOS) is the art, education, and landscape research practice of Eric Ellingsen. Species of Space is a constantly-emereging watershed of Ellingsen's creative activity. More like a forest or a pond than a CV. A career as creative path.
Species, as a concept can't exist with only one person. For over two-decades dedicated to co-producing novel 21st century Earth-first Design & Art learning models. Co-authoring and individually authoring. Focusing on sound-first, eco-semiotic embodied approaches to having living agency in the pedagogic histories of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Art. Taking a 'landscape as language' scientific approach. Working at the edge of experimental writing. Working internationally and hyper-locally with curators, cities, schools, spiritual communities, non-profits, museums, collectives, and collectors. Embracing drawing and time-based representation in every form imaginable. Yielding eco-cinematic views. Storytelling as a form of our species survival. Attempting to have even a small hand and positive impact in anything that is meaningful in relation to our life & time together on this planet making space with each other. While beeing fair and just, as well as emotionally touching in some small and curious way that only our human species is capable of. Often operating on a project to project basis. Works on commissions fit to fundraisers and raising. Because Ellingsen is also the Executive Director of the National Building Arts Center, Sauget, Illinois, USA.
Species of Space receives more than its name from the book SPECIES OF SPACES by Georges Perec. Our "infra-ordinary" soundivision method, is to structure enriching encounters with the world. To address shared pasts, preserve common futures, and alter nows. We do all we can with what we have.
